Thelma Duffey, Ph.D.

Welcome! I am Professor and Chair in the Department of Counseling at the University of Texas at San Antonio and licensed in professional counseling and marriage and family therapy in Texas.  I also serve as managing partner for a multidisciplinary counseling and psychotherapy practice. We have been located in the heart of Alamo Heights, in San Antonio, Texas, for over 19 years.  My colleagues and I provide counseling services to individuals, couples, and families facing a broad range of issues. My style is interactive, and I draw from a number of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral, Relational-Cultural Therapy, The Enneagram Personality Typology, and Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT).

I began my work with children who were chronic and terminally ill and their families, an experience that has been among my greatest teachers.  My time with the children, their siblings, and parents helped shape my perspective on life, loss, and the preservation of human dignity, and continues to influence my work to this day.

Much of my work involves helping people discover personal strengths and passions, and reconcile differences with people they love. Learning to communicate, negotiate, and broaden each person's world view are common goals in this work. Other times, our work involves coming to terms with losses, such as those that accompany relationship disruptions, addiction, miscarriage, and betrayal, for example.  I recently edited a book for counselors and other helping professionals entitled Creative Interventions in Grief and Loss Therapy: When the Music Stops, a Dream Diespublished by The Haworth Press, Inc., Taylor & Francis Group. The book describes these and other life-changing challenges and provides a wide range of creative interventions for helping negotiate them, such as the use of music, books, and journaling.

If you would like further information on my services, please call my office at 210.822.5795 or e-mail me at tduffey@satx.rr.com.
